Parachute Candidate

The pejorative term for the practice of party elites imposing candidates without any local roots in a given constituency.

While “parachuting” is universally frowned upon in the media, it is worth noting that some of our country’s greatest political success stories have been “parachute candidates”: C.D. Howe, Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau, to name a few.
