Mary Simon is Canada’s First Indigenous Governor General

Campbell Strategies extends our warmest congratulations to Mary Simon, Canada’s new Governor General. She is the first Indigenous person to serve in this position.

My colleagues and I at Campbell Strategies were honoured to work with Ms. Simon on our “Pivoting North” conference in February, where she spoke about the challenges and opportunities in Canada’s North. Her extensive policy work informed Canada’s Arctic and Northern Policy Framework. Ms. Simon has held many important positions including: Canada’s Ambassador for Circumpolar Affairs, Ambassador to Denmark, and as President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Canada’s national Inuit organization. She brings enormous experience and sensitivity to her position as Canada’s Governor General at a crucial moment when Canadians are confronting their past relationships with Indigenous Peoples and must develop models for better outcomes in the future.
